Founded in 2016 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, about 70 miles northwest of Philadelphia, a waste management franchise is gradually setting a pace for success.

Dumpster Dudez sold its first franchise in 2020, and then launched a full franchise initiative in April 2022. At the time, the franchise had 3 locations.

Today, Dumpster Dudez has 32 locations with further expansion from franchisees on the way.

Willie Katinowsky, director of franchise development at Dumber Dudez, says solid customer service is part of the business’s formula, “Our franchisees provide unsurpassed customer service which is why we are successful; they make it as easy as possible for their customers.”

“As franchisors, I believe we handle our support structure differently than other brands,” Katinowsky adds. “Our franchisees have direct access to all of our team members, including our founder and CEO.”

The waste management franchise views its dumpsters as billboards.

Adding to the Dumpster Dudez run is “a strong brand name that is easy to remember,” according to Katinowsky.

New franchisees enter the Dumpster Dudez business model with a single truck and 24 dumpsters. The company’s founder Dustin Kiene started in a similar fashion and has since grown to 5 trucks and 200 dumpers.

Katinowsky notes that each of the dumpsters and trucks serves as a billboard for Dumpster Dudez.

“When Dustin grew to 100 dumpsters, it was hard to go anywhere in our area without seeing them and the logo,” Katinowsky notes.

The customer breakdown at Dumpster Dudez is nearly a 50/50 split between contractors, including roofers, flooring restoration and remodelers, and homeowners conducting DIY cleanouts or their own remodeling projects.

With their initial presence only being in Pennsylvania until 2022, Dumpster Dudez now operates in 16 different states.

One of the benefits of being a Dumpster Dudez franchisee is the approach to technology and changing times. “We identify ourselves as leaders in the digital landscape,” the director says. “We are utilizing unique strategies to drive organic traffic that’s yielding better results than what most of our competitors are seeing.”

Regarding the health of the industry, the global waste management market was valued at US$1.3 trillion in 2022, according to Statista. This market was projected to register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4 percent from 2023 to 2030, to reach 1.96 trillion U.S. dollars in the latter year.

In the United States, the waste and recycling industry was worth an estimated $91 billion in revenue during 2022, according to data from research and consulting firm Waste Business Journal, up from $82 billion in 2021.

Katinowsky says one of the biggest challenges the franchise faces is finding franchisees that are a strong fit and that also have the money to invest while being able to navigate their first year of business. Once a franchisee is seeing success, the next move will be adding more dumpsters and trucks to their inventory.

So far, all franchise fees and royalties have been poured back into the company for updates and improvements.

“Our franchisees have strong relationships with our leadership team,” Katinowsky said. “They meet us and feel from us the type of support they need.”

“We genuinely want them all to be successful.”
