MONTREAL, February 15, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The Quebec Mila Institute of Artificial Intelligence is proud to announce the hosting of an international conference on human rights and artificial intelligence (AI). The conference, titled “Protection of human rights in the era of AI,” will take place at Mila’s facilities in Montreal from February 14 to 16, 2024. The aim of the conference is to emphasize and promote the pivotal efforts required to integrate human rights into AI governance mechanisms.
The event will bring together senior officials from the United Nations, OECD, UNESCO, IEEE, NIST, Amnesty International, the Council of Europe, and many other organizations, to engage in discussions on a wide range of topics, including impact assessments on human rights, risk assessment tools and metrics, and the availability of redress mechanisms. This is one of the first official events where these important international organizations come together to address the nexus of AI governance and human rights.
The global AI governance landscape has advanced significantly over the past year, with most national governments and multilateral organizations prioritizing AI governance. However, much of the debate around AI governance and human rights has evolved separately, leaving the intersection of these two areas underexplored and insufficiently understood.
In addition to panel discussions with leaders from academia, civil society, and the policy communities, working group sessions will convene key stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues related to human rights impact assessments, laying the foundation for the formulation of concrete recommendations that will help shape the future of international AI governance.

Amandeep Singh Gill, Deputy Secretary General and Technical Envoy at the United Nations, stated, “This conversation on AI and human rights hosted by Mila is very timely, as this year we have a unique opportunity at the United Nations Future Summit to shape our digital future. We must ensure that the power of AI is realized, harnessed for global good, and risks are addressed through governance based on international norms, including universal human rights.”
Karine Perset, Director of the OECD Policy Observatory and Expert Network.AI, emphasized Mila’s timely dialogue, particularly in light of the decisive policy initiatives that will come to fruition in 2024, stating, “Human rights, well-being, and inclusion are critical challenges for our collective future with AI. Policymakers and all actors in the ‘AI value chain must work together to provide the pillars of agile and effective solutions to ensure reliable and beneficial AI. We must maintain and deepen mutual learning, dialogue, and trust between technologists and all stakeholder groups.”
