Quebec AI Institute Hosts International AI & Human Rights Conference

Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, is happy to announce its hosting of an international conference focused on the intersection of human rights and artificial intelligence (AI). This conference, “Protecting Human Rights in the Age of AI”, scheduled to take place from February 14-16, 2024, in Montreal, will bring together high-level representatives from various international organizations and provide a platform to discuss key issues related to human rights and AI.

The focus of this event will be to shed light on and further the crucial efforts required to integrate human rights into AI governance mechanisms. Mila aims to facilitate a dialogue among esteemed representatives from the United Nations, OECD, UNESCO, IEEE, NIST, Amnesty International, the Council of Europe, and many others. By collectively addressing the need for human rights impact assessments, risk assessment tools and metrics, and the availability of redress mechanisms, this conference marks a significant step in addressing the intersection of AI governance and human rights.

Driven by the increasing global recognition of AI governance as a priority, efforts to make strides in this area have gathered momentum over the past year. However, the ongoing separate development of discussions on AI governance and human rights has resulted in a lack of sufficient understanding on the overlap between the two domains. The conference will aim to bridge this gap by fostering critical discussions and formulating concrete recommendations that will help shape the future of international AI governance.

The conference will include panel discussions with leading representatives from science, civil society, and politics, alongside working group meetings that will enable key stakeholders to discuss crucial issues related to human rights impact assessment. These discussions will pave the way for the formulation of tangible recommendations that will contribute to the development of international AI governance mechanisms.
