A new franchise agreement calls for the development of 600 locations.
Church’s Texas Chicken and sister brand Texas Chicken have announced a major expansion agreement that will bring the quick-service restaurant to China.
The Atlanta-based brand is partnering with Deke Shengtang, an operator of multiple QSR brands in the market. Shengtang has signed a new franchise agreement that calls for the development of 600 locations in China.
The first location in China is slated to open in Shanghai this summer with additional restaurants to follow.
“This is more than growth. It’s a defining moment for our brand,” said Roland Gonzalez, CEO of Church’s Texas Chicken and Texas Chicken. “China is one of the most dynamic and influential consumer markets in the world, and we’re showing up with a brand that’s built for connection—big flavor, real value, and a spirit that brings people together. We’re excited to partner with a team that knows how to win locally.”
Church’s Texas Chicken said this move marks its largest international development agreement to date. The company, founded in San Antonio by George W. Church Sr. in 1952, already operates globally with China being its 27th international market. According to Church’s Texas Chicken, this move builds on international momentum following growth in Europe and other global markets last year.

“As we expand around the world, we’re intentional about how we do it,” said Tim Wadell, Executive Vice President, International Business at Church’s Texas Chicken and Texas Chicken. “The team at Deke Shengtang brings the local expertise and ambition we look for in a partner. China presents a significant opportunity, and together, we’re building something designed to last, rooted in local relevance while staying true to who we are.”
Church’s Texas Chicken said it will announce additional details regarding restaurant design, locations, and future openings in China closer to launch of the Shanghai location.
Overall, Church’s Texas Chicken and Texas Chicken have more than 1,400 locations globally with system-wide sales of $1.5 billion. The brand has been owned by High Bluff Capital Partners and FS Investments since 2021.
Domestically, Church’s largest markets include Texas where it has 316 locations followed by 47 in Georgia and 40 in California. The brand has locations in 27 U.S. states along with the District of Columbia.
