The latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report have highlighted Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) and COMP-Northwest as Tier 1 institutions for primary care training in the U.S. This prestigious recognition places WesternU among only 15 institutions in the top tier for primary care, and one of just two osteopathic medical schools to achieve this honor.
Under the new methodology for the 2024-25 rankings, Tier 1 institutions are those in the 85th percentile or higher of medical schools ranked. This acknowledgment reflects the exceptional education and training provided at COMP and COMP-Northwest, as stated by WesternU Provost Paula M. Crone, DO ’92. The commitment to producing highly skilled and compassionate primary care physicians is evident in the graduates’ impressive placement rates and dedication to serving their communities.
WesternU COMP & COMP-Northwest have also been recognized for having the 7th most graduates practicing in primary care. This ranking by U.S. News is based on the percentage of graduates practicing in primary care fields between 2015-17. The emphasis on humanism in medicine, compassionate care, patient-centered practice, and the osteopathic principles at WesternU sets it apart from other institutions, according to COMP and COMP-Northwest Dean Lisa Warren, DO ’01, MBA.
In addition to primary care training, COMP and COMP-Northwest have also been acknowledged for their diversity, with a tie at #142 for the most diverse medical schools. They also rank at #133 for the most graduates practicing in Health Professional Shortage Areas and tie at #75 for the most graduates practicing in Rural Areas. Furthermore, they have achieved Tier 4 status in the Best Medical Schools: Research category.
