Weekend Box Office: DESPICABLE ME 4 Tops, LONGLEGS at #2

In the second weekend, Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 continues to dominate at the box office with a $44.65M domestic take, holding strong at #1. Despite franchise fatigue and low reviews, the film managed an impressive 40% drop from its opening weekend, setting itself apart from previous entries in the series. With a global cume of $437.8M, the Despicable Me/Minions franchise surpasses $5 billion in total box office earnings, solidifying its position as the first animated franchise to achieve this milestone.

On the horror front, Neon’s Longlegs surprises with a $22.6M domestic opening, becoming the biggest independent horror film debut in the last decade. While the film received mixed audience reviews, its strong performance marks a significant success for the genre in 2024. Distributor Neon celebrates the achievement and looks forward to continued success with director Osgood Perkins.

Sony and Apple’s romantic comedy/drama Fly Me to the Moon falls short of expectations with a $10M domestic opening. Despite star power from Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson, the film struggles to find its audience, facing middling reviews and limited appeal among older adult viewers. However, international markets show promise as the film takes in $9M across 52 territories.

In other notable performances, Twisters debuts overseas with $11.5 million in 38 markets, while Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 continues to break records, surpassing $1.35B globally. A24’s Sing Sing impresses with a strong NY/LA opening, generating positive buzz and high exit poll scores.

Overall, the weekend box office estimates total $127.5M domestically, showing a 9% decrease compared to the previous year. Despite fluctuations in performance, the film industry continues to showcase a diverse range of genres and audiences, with Despicable Me 4 and Longlegs leading the way in unexpected success stories.
