Tencent recently unveiled Microcosm, the largest virtual urban historical landscape that brings Beijing’s Central Axis to life online. This immersive experience, accessible through the Digital Central Axis Weixin Mini Program, provides users with a guided tour of the heritage site, allowing them to explore its history and details in stunning 3D. The project launch coincided with the Central Axis being added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting its cultural significance.
In addition to exploring the Digital Central Axis, users can also participate in the Digital Watchman project, a crowdsourced conservation initiative that allows individuals to report signs of deterioration or damage by scanning QR codes and uploading inspection reports through the Mini Program. This innovative approach engages locals and visitors in preserving this important cultural monument and ensuring its maintenance for future generations.
Microcosm took three years to create using advanced technologies such as high-definition scanning and modeling, resulting in a detailed replica covering 200km x 200km with over 15 terabytes of 3D data. The site features 15 heritage landmarks, showcasing Chinese imperial design and urban planning principles that have endured through centuries of dynasties.
Furthermore, Tencent has integrated cultural elements of the Central Axis into various scenarios, including music, videos, animations, and mobile games, to promote conservation and research. The Digital Central Axis project has already attracted over 4.5 million visits, 800,000 registered users, and 17,000 Digital Watchman volunteers, demonstrating significant public engagement and proactive conservation efforts.
By leveraging technologies like big data, cloud computing, AI, and gametech, Tencent is setting a new standard for conservation and heritage projects. These tools not only create meaningful experiences for users but also help protect cultural treasures in the digital era. The project exemplifies Tencent’s commitment to using technology for good and enhancing the quality of life for people worldwide.
