Tamu Chambers, a professor in the Department of Education and Social Sciences at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY, has been named Woman of the Month for March 2024 by P.O.W.E.R. (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized). Chambers has over 20 years of experience teaching courses on sociology, ethnic studies, and African and African-American history, both in the classroom and online.
Chambers holds an M.S. degree from SUNY at Albany and a B.A. degree from the College of Saint Rose, both located in Albany. In addition to her work at HVCC, Chambers co-founded the Diversity Enrichment Program at Russell Sage College in Troy and continues to design curriculum and deliver diversity programs for various organizations in New York’s Capital Region and the State University of New York (SUNY).
Beyond her work in education, Chambers is also an accomplished author, with published works including “Understanding and Overcoming Adversity,” “21st Century Anthology: Higher Education, Pride, Purpose, and Passion,” “KWANZAA A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture,” and “An American Tragedy: Katrina’s Closet.”
Chambers has received numerous awards and honors for her dedication to teaching and mentoring students, including the 2014 Hudson Valley Community College – Muslim Student Association Certificate of Honors and Awards for Exceptional Dedication in Advising and Mentoring. She is affiliated with several prestigious organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, the National Association of Black Women Historians, and the National Education Association (NEA).
As a public speaker and producer of women’s history programs, Chambers is passionate about addressing societal issues and promoting diversity and inclusion. She holds an M.A. in the History of Africa and an M.S. in Women’s Studies.
