Summer McIntosh wins Canada’s 1st silver in Paris 400m freestyle

Toronto teen Summer McIntosh captured Canada’s first medal at the Olympic Games in Paris with a silver in the 400-metre freestyle swimming event. McIntosh finished behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who defended her Olympic crown in impressive fashion. Katie Ledecky of the United States took home the bronze. This race was highly anticipated as all three medallists were past or present world record holders.

McIntosh, a rising star in the swimming world, previously came close to an Olympic medal at just 14 years old in Tokyo. She is known for her prowess in the 400 individual medley, where she holds the world record. McIntosh expressed her nerves leading up to the race but was ultimately pleased with her performance.

The race has been compared to the iconic men’s 200 freestyle showdown between Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe, and Pieter van den Hoogenband in 2004. McIntosh spoke highly of her competitors, Titmus and Ledecky, acknowledging their influence in pushing her to perform at her best.

In addition to her individual achievement, McIntosh also contributed to the Canadian women’s 4×100 relay team, which finished fourth in the final. The Australian women’s team set an Olympic record in the event, securing their country’s fourth consecutive gold medal in the relay.

On the men’s side, Canada’s 4×100 relay team finished in sixth place, with the U.S. team, anchored by Caeleb Dressel, winning gold and setting a second successive freestyle title. Dressel’s performance earned him his eighth career Olympic gold medal.

The Paris Olympics have already proven to be an exciting showcase of top-tier swimming talent, with McIntosh shining as one of the standout performers. Fans can continue to follow the action on various platforms, including CBC, Sportsnet, TSN, and online streaming options like CBC Gem and the CBC Sports Paris 2024 App.

As McIntosh and her fellow competitors gear up for their upcoming events, the swimming world eagerly anticipates more thrilling races and potential medal victories. Stay tuned to witness the impressive skills and determination of these world-class athletes as they vie for glory at the Paris Olympics.
