Steph Curry defeats Sabrina Ionescu in 3-point challenge

NBA and WNBA Star Shootout: Steph Curry vs Sabrina Ionescu

Steph Curry faced off against Sabrina Ionescu in the NBA and WNBA’s inaugural 3-point challenge during the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. The long-distance shootout had basketball fans abuzz, pitting two of the sport’s greatest 3-point shooters against each other for the first time.

The showdown was initially set for Curry to take shots from the NBA 3-point line with NBA basketballs, while Ionescu would shoot from the WNBA line with WNBA balls. However, Ionescu, who prefers shooting from the NBA line, opted to take her shots from there.

Ionescu led the competition with 26 points after making seven consecutive shots before missing her first. An inspired Curry, who commented on her remarkable starting performance, followed up with 29 points, earning him the victory for the evening.

Both athletes displayed exceptional sportsmanship, with Curry praising Ionescu’s achievement and Ionescu commending Curry for setting the bar high. Curry, the Golden State Warriors’ point guard, said, “this couldn’t have gone any better,” while Ionescu described the experience as “amazing.”

Curry, widely recognized as the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history, received a championship belt adorned with a pair of goats, symbolizing his status as the top 3-point shooter of all time. Meanwhile, Ionescu, known for her sharpshooting beyond the 3-point line, holds the WNBA’s single-season 3-point record and made history with her performance at last year’s WNBA All-Star weekend.

The idea to have Curry and Ionescu face off originated after Ionescu’s standout performance at the WNBA 3-point contest, during which she challenged Curry to a shootout. Curry accepted the challenge, eager to outdo Ionescu’s record-breaking scoring.

The star-studded event had more than just bragging rights on the line. The NBA and WNBA each made donations to both Curry’s nonprofit organization, Eat.Learn.Play., and Ionescu’s SI20 Foundation. Additionally, State Farm pledged to contribute to the NBA Foundation’s efforts to support economic empowerment in the Black community based on the number of shots made by either player.

The showdown showcased the unwavering competitive spirit and mutual respect between two of basketball’s finest athletes. As they continue to inspire others through their superb skills and sportsmanship, this inaugural 3-point challenge was a historic moment for the NBA and WNBA.
