Spurs trade for Wembanyama’s co-star in 3-team deal

The San Antonio Spurs are gearing up for what could be a pivotal offseason as they look to rebuild and get back into playoff contention. With two top-10 picks and $25 million in cap space, the Spurs have the assets to make some big moves. One potential trade scenario that has been floated around involves sending Tre Jones, Devonte Graham, and five first-round picks to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Trae Young and Jevon Carter. Additionally, Sidy Cissoko would be sent to the Chicago Bulls, who would receive De’Andre Hunter in return.

While landing Young would be a huge get for the Spurs, there are some downsides to the proposed deal. Giving up their pick in this year’s draft, which is projected to be a top-three selection, could be a tough pill to swallow. However, they would receive Sacramento’s pick in return, essentially making it a pick swap. The Spurs would also have to part ways with the picks they received in the Dejounte Murray deal, which may not be the wisest move considering the potential talent in future drafts.

One alternative scenario could involve the Spurs trading other first-round picks instead of the ones received in the Murray deal. This could potentially allow them to hold onto better selections while still acquiring Young. The Hawks would still receive a hefty package of draft picks, and the Bulls would benefit from getting a starting wing without having to give up a pick.

Ultimately, the goal for the Spurs would be to land Young while strategically holding onto certain picks to maintain flexibility for future drafts. While the proposed deal may not be perfect for San Antonio, they have the assets and flexibility to negotiate a trade that works better for them. The Hawks and Bulls may be eager to make the deal, but the Spurs have the opportunity to push for a more favorable outcome.

As the season winds down and the Spurs look ahead to the offseason, all eyes will be on how they navigate the trade market and position themselves for success in the future. With the potential to land a star player like Trae Young, the Spurs have a chance to make a significant move that could shape the franchise for years to come. Stay tuned for updates as the offseason approaches and the trade rumors continue to swirl.
