SPINE CARE: FUTURE FORWARD

The National University Spine Institute (NUSI) recently concluded a series of spine-related events aimed at providing doctors with a platform for professional development and networking. As a new specialist spine institute in Singapore under the National University Health System (NUHS), NUSI is dedicated to offering multidisciplinary care for patients with spinal diseases and deformities.

Led by Associate Professor Gabriel Liu, NUSI aims to establish new standards in spine care through a patient-centric approach. With a focus on addressing the rapid increase in complex spine healthcare demands for both non-operative and operative treatments in an ageing population, NUSI is committed to providing value-driven patient care and developing community care programs.

One of the key highlights from the recent events was the introduction of SpineAI, a deep learning model that helps radiologists identify spinal abnormalities more efficiently. Dr. Jonathan Tan, a Consultant at NUSI and NUH, shared this application of artificial intelligence at the NUSI Fellows Best Practice and Research Conference, which brought together local and international spine specialists to discuss cutting-edge surgical techniques.

The NUSI Public Spine Symposium, scheduled for March 30, will feature free talks by NUSI doctors on various spinal conditions, along with exercises to strengthen the back, free scoliosis and osteoporosis screenings, and insights from members of Scoliosis Support Singapore on living with and overcoming scoliosis.

At NUSI, a multidisciplinary approach involving orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, and rehabilitation clinicians is taken to provide seamless patient care across the full spectrum of spine conditions. This includes the latest technologies in minimally invasive, navigation, robotic spine surgery, as well as complex surgical techniques for the treatment of scoliosis, spinal tumours, degenerative spine disorders, and spinal trauma.

As part of the National University Health System (NUHS), NUSI collaborates with other institutions to transform how illness is prevented and managed through innovative research, clinical trials, and the development of better care delivery systems. Through partnerships with various health and social care providers, NUHS aims to contribute to a healthy and engaged population in Singapore.
