Son asks for help in video, police respond

In August of last year, a horrifying case of child abuse came to light in Ivins, Utah, when Ruby Franke’s 12-year-old son managed to escape from Jodi Hildebrandt’s home and seek help from neighbors. The released videos show the boy visibly malnourished and with duct tape around his extremities. The police later found his 10-year-old sister locked in a dark closet inside Hildebrandt’s home. Both Franke and Hildebrandt were sentenced to at least four years in prison for aggravated child abuse.

The footage revealed the harrowing ordeal the children went through, as well as the disturbing conditions they were living in. The 12-year-old sought help from neighbors, asking to be taken to the nearest police station. His sister was found in a closet, sitting still and moving slowly. The police had to coax her out of hiding, offering her food and reassurance.

Authorities also searched Hildebrandt’s home, finding evidence of the abuse the children suffered. Handcuffs and rope were seized, along with other items like bandages and plastic wrap. Both Franke and Hildebrandt were interviewed by the police, but only Hildebrandt expressed a desire to speak, deferring to her attorney’s advice. They were eventually taken into custody and charged with child abuse.

The released videos shed light on the traumatic experience the children endured and the actions taken by law enforcement to rescue them. The quick response of neighbors and police ensured that the children were saved from further harm. The footage serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and reporting suspected cases of abuse.

It is crucial to be aware of the signs of child abuse and neglect and to report any suspicions to the authorities. By being proactive and observant, we can help prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. The bravery of Franke’s son in seeking help and the dedication of law enforcement in rescuing the children are commendable. Let us all work together to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
