SIS flags 79 suspicious football matches in 2024’s first half

Starlizard Integrity Services (SIS) has identified 79 suspicious football matches globally in the first half of 2024, indicating a troubling trend in the world of sports integrity. Of these matches, 21.5% were played in a single country in the CONMEBOL region (South America), where there was a significant 200% increase in suspicious matches compared to the previous year.

SIS analyzes tens of thousands of football matches each year to detect irregularities that suggest possible match-fixing. In the first half of 2024, 79 matches were flagged as suspicious out of 36,841 matches analyzed, representing 0.21% of the total. This figure is lower than the previous year, where 79 suspicious matches were identified from a smaller sample size, indicating a higher percentage.

Key findings from the data include:
– 17 suspicious matches (21.5%) were from a single country in the CONMEBOL region, with 33 matches overall in this region.
– 40 matches (50.6%) showed suspicious betting patterns in the markets, almost double the number from the previous year.
– 11 matches (13.9%) had a high level of suspicion, while 39 matches (49.4%) had a medium level of suspicion.
– 29 matches (36.7%) were played in the UEFA region (Europe), with a decrease from the previous year.

Affy Sheikhdirector of SIS highlighted the concerning increase in suspicious matches in the CONMEBOL region and the manipulation of betting markets. The data underscores the ongoing threat of match-fixing to the integrity of football and urges the industry to address these issues effectively.
