Sinopec & TotalEnergies Pact for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sinopec and TotalEnergies Join Forces to Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel

China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has sealed a groundbreaking agreement with TotalEnergies to create sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from waste oils at a Sinopec refinery. This partnership aims to reach an annual production capacity of 230,000 tons, with both companies collaborating on the new production line.

Sinopec’s Chairman, Ma Yongsheng, praised the joint venture as a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to providing high-quality, environmentally friendly solutions. By combining Sinopec’s bio-jet fuel technology (SRJET) with TotalEnergies’ expertise in SAF production, the partnership is well-positioned to supply superior green and low-carbon solutions worldwide.

TotalEnergies’ Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, expressed excitement about partnering with Sinopec to manufacture SAF in China. This project is a key component of TotalEnergies’ strategy to support the aviation sector in reducing its carbon footprint. The company aims to produce 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.

Sinopec has been a leader in advancing China’s bio-jet fuel industry for years. Bio-jet fuel, a type of SAF produced from renewable resources, offers significant reductions in CO2 emissions compared to traditional petroleum-based jet fuels. Sinopec developed its bio-jet fuel production technology in 2009, achieving commercial production in 2011. The company conducted trial and commercial flights using bio-jet fuel in subsequent years, establishing itself as a pioneer in the industry.

In addition to partnering with TotalEnergies, Sinopec has signed an MOU with Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce to further promote its products and expand its market reach. This collaboration underscores Sinopec’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the aviation industry.
