RC AlUla Celebrates International Arabian Leopard Day with Global Campaign to Protect Endangered Big Cats

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has marked International Arabian Leopard Day with a new campaign aimed at raising global awareness and action to protect the critically endangered big cat species. The latest international edition of the annual call to action for the protection of Arabian leopards includes the launch of the online game “Quest for Hope” on platforms like Roblox and Decentraland, as part of the new campaign “Leap of Hope.”

To honor the Arabian leopard’s athletic prowess and ability to capture prey in the wild, this year’s campaign also highlights the pressing need to increase the number of individuals in certain wild populations. The English term “leap” does not only refer to the athletic “leap” of the animal, but also designates a “group” of leopards.

The “Leap of Hope” campaign will feature eye-catching billboards in cities such as Beijing, London, New York, and Paris to convey its bold ambition and highlight the RCU’s goal to regenerate AlUla, a vast region in north-western Saudi Arabia, into a leading global destination for cultural and natural heritage.

Additionally, a parade organized by the RCU and Catmosphere in AlUla to celebrate International Arabian Leopard Day will encourage the public to reconnect with nature by following a 7km route on the Catwalk Trail of Sharaan. The digital space will offer an immersive adventure, “Quest for Hope,” which invites players around the world to discover the real-world impact of the Arabian leopard’s critically endangered status in the wild by joining a virtual conservation mission.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Arabian leopard as Critically Endangered, indicating a serious level of risk. The RCU’s Arabian Leopard Conservation and Breeding Program has succeeded in ensuring a healthy captive leopard population, welcoming the birth of seven healthy leopard cubs in 2023 and introducing new breeding animals to increase genetic diversity.
