Raiders’ Garoppolo Suspended for Drug Policy Violation

Las Vegas Raiders backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended by the NFL for the first two games of next season due to a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. It was also reported that the Raiders are likely to release Garoppolo before an $11.25 million roster bonus kicks in next month.

According to reports, Garoppolo used a prescribed medication without a valid therapeutic use exemption from the NFL, leading to the suspension. His future with the Raiders seemed uncertain after then-interim coach Antonio Pierce replaced him with rookie Aidan O’Connell for the remainder of the season. Pierce has since been named the Raiders’ full-time coach, and the team also hired Tom Telesco as their general manager.

Garoppolo, who was signed by the Raiders last offseason to a three-year, $72.75 million contract, had a challenging season with seven touchdown passes, nine interceptions, and a 77.6 quarterback rating. This performance ultimately led to O’Connell taking over as the starting quarterback. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Garoppolo expressed a desire to continue playing and remain open to his options.

Looking ahead, the Raiders have significant decisions to make regarding their quarterback situation. O’Connell, who went 5-4 under Pierce, could potentially retain the starting role. Alternatively, the team may explore options in free agency, a trade, or the upcoming draft to upgrade the position.

O’Connell expressed a willingness to face competition, acknowledging that it is a part of the NFL and that his goal is to retain his job as the team’s starting quarterback. As the Raiders navigate these decisions, the future of the quarterback position remains a focal point for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Raiders will address their quarterback position and navigate the implications of Garoppolo’s suspension and potential release. This development adds an element of uncertainty to the team’s offseason plans and sets the stage for a pivotal period as the Raiders make strategic decisions to shape their roster for the upcoming season.
