Raiders’ Garoppolo Suspended 2 Games for Violation

The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, has been suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Sources say that the violation is related to Garoppolo using a prescribed medication without having a valid therapeutic use exemption from the league. Garoppolo has opted not to appeal the suspension and will miss the first two games of the 2024 season.

The Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, when he would earn an $11.25 million roster bonus. Additionally, there is an $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 season that could be voided due to the suspension. Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders in March. However, with a new coach and general manager in place, there is no longer a commitment to Garoppolo. The Raiders are now looking to add another quarterback in the draft and may even trade up from the No. 13 pick they currently hold.

Once Garoppolo is released, the Raiders will be left with quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell and veteran Brian Hoyer on their roster. It is expected that Garoppolo will be seeking his third team in as many seasons, having played with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 before joining the Raiders in 2023.

Under NFL rules, Garoppolo will be allowed to participate in all offseason activities and training camp with any new team he signs with. However, once the regular season begins, he will be barred from playing for two weeks due to the suspension.
