QatarEnergy has recently announced a new LNG expansion project, the ‘North Field West’ project, which will significantly increase the State of Qatar’s LNG production capacity to 142 million tons per annum (MTPA) by the end of the decade. This expansion represents a substantial 85% increase from current production levels, showcasing Qatar’s commitment to growing its energy sector.
During a press conference at QatarEnergy’s Headquarters in Doha, H.E. Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi unveiled the plans for the project. The Minister highlighted that extensive appraisal drilling and testing have confirmed the presence of productive layers of Qatar’s North Field extending towards the west, allowing for the development of the new LNG production project in Ras Laffan.
With the discovery of additional gas quantities in the North Field estimated at 240 trillion cubic feet, Qatar’s gas reserves have increased from 1,760 to more than 2,000 trillion cubic feet. Additionally, condensates reserves have risen from 70 to more than 80 billion barrels, along with significant quantities of liquefied petroleum gas, ethane, and helium.
Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized that these results open up new opportunities for Qatar’s gas industry, paving the way for a new LNG project from the North Field’s western sector with a production capacity of about 16 MTPA. This expansion will push the State of Qatar’s total LNG production to approximately 142 MTPA, marking an impressive 85% surge from current levels.
This ambitious project is set to position Qatar as a key player in the global LNG market, demonstrating the country’s continued dedication to innovation and growth in the energy sector. With the completion of the ‘North Field West’ project, Qatar’s total hydrocarbon production is anticipated to surpass 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.
QatarEnergy’s announcement of the ‘North Field West’ project signifies a significant milestone in Qatar’s energy landscape, showcasing the country’s unwavering commitment to advancing its LNG production capabilities. As Qatar continues to explore new horizons in the energy sector, this expansion project is poised to solidify the nation’s position as a leading player in the global energy market.
