Puerto Rico activates National Guard for Tropical Storm Ernesto

Tropical Storm Ernesto is making its way towards the Caribbean, prompting Puerto Rico to activate the National Guard and cancel the start of classes in public schools. With maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, and power outages to the region.

Officials are urging residents to stay prepared and alert as the storm approaches, with uncertain trajectory changes expected. Puerto Rico’s power grid, still fragile from the impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017, faces the risk of widespread outages. The U.S. Virgin Islands are also bracing for potential power disruptions, with blackouts already announced on some islands.

As Ernesto moves towards Bermuda, it is predicted to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecasted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year, with the possibility of 17 to 25 named storms and four to seven major hurricanes.

With the peak of hurricane season approaching, government officials are emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness. Puerto Rico’s Governor has activated over 340 shelters across the island, while the U.S. Virgin Islands Governor is urging residents to take the storm seriously as a practice run for future potential threats.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about the storm’s progress and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The National Guard and emergency management officials are on standby to assist with any evacuations or rescue efforts. Stay tuned for updates on Tropical Storm Ernesto as it continues to move towards the Caribbean islands.
