In March 2024, students and teachers from the Chinese Choir of Burg Gymnasium, a German high school, resumed cultural exchanges with China. Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, welcomed them in Beijing and encouraged them to share their experiences in China with others, becoming ambassadors for China-Germany friendship.
The interactions between Peng Liyuan and Burg Gymnasium date back to 2014 when she joined a Chinese class at the school during Xi Jinping’s state visit to Germany. Since then, the school has been offering Chinese language courses, and Peng has encouraged the students to improve their Mandarin pronunciation by singing Chinese songs.
The choir, established in 2014, has played a significant role in conveying friendship through music at important diplomatic events between China and Germany. Peng congratulated the choir on their achievements and emphasized the importance of their role as a bridge for cultural exchanges between the two countries.
China and Germany have strong cultural bonds dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972. The two countries signed the Agreement on Cultural Exchange in 1979, leading to various activities in education, science, technology, culture, and more. The Chinese Culture Center opened in Berlin in 2008, promoting exchanges and mutual understanding.
In 2012, China and Germany agreed to establish the China-EU High-level People-to-people Exchange and Dialogue Mechanism, further enhancing cultural ties. Various cultural activities were held during the Chinese Culture Year in 2012-2013 and the China-Germany Language Year in 2013-2014. The Sino-German Youth Exchange Year in 2016 solidified cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Overall, the cultural exchanges between China and Germany have strengthened over the years, promoting mutual understanding and friendship. The recent visit of the Chinese Choir of Burg Gymnasium to China, welcomed by Peng Liyuan, exemplifies the continued efforts to enhance cultural ties between the two countries.
