Paul Di’Anno: Remembering the Original Voice of Iron Maiden
Legendary vocalist Paul Di’Anno, known for his guttural and aggressive vocal style, passed away at the age of 66. Born Paul Andrews in 1958 in Chingford, east London, he made a lasting impact as the founding singer of the iconic heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Di’Anno was instrumental in shaping the band’s early sound, contributing to their pioneering albums, Iron Maiden and Killers, which established them as a cornerstone of the new wave of British heavy metal.
Di’Anno joined Iron Maiden in 1977, just as the band was trying to carve out its niche amid the rising tide of punk rock. His departure paved the way for Bruce Dickinson, who led Iron Maiden to even greater heights with iconic tracks like "Run To The Hills" and "Can I Play With Madness." Despite the changes, Di’Anno harbored no animosity toward his former bandmates, denying longstanding rumors of bad blood or underpayment; he affirmed that he was well-treated during his time with Iron Maiden.
Following his exit from Iron Maiden, Di’Anno continued to influence the heavy metal scene with his raw vocals, inspiring renowned bands such as Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura. He pursued a solo career while also joining other bands like Gogmagog and Battlezone. Despite health challenges in recent years, including lymphedema that required extensive care and surgery, Di’Anno maintained a busy touring schedule, performing over 100 shows in 2023 alone.
In a heartfelt tribute, Iron Maiden’s bassist Steve Harris shared his sorrow on social media, emphasizing Di’Anno’s monumental contribution to the band. Harris recounted that, even until his passing, Di’Anno was dedicated to his craft, regularly performing and staying connected with fans. The band collectively acknowledged his pivotal role in their journey, noting how his fierce presence and distinctive vocals helped set the foundation for their success over the decades.
Di’Anno’s recent work included the release of a career retrospective album, The Book of the Beast, which features highlights from his solo career along with reworked Iron Maiden songs.
