A shooting near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, tragically took the life of one person and left many wounded, including several young children and teens. The incident occurred at the conclusion of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday. According to Kansas City Police Department Chief Stacey Graves, at least 21 people were injured, with eight sustaining “immediately” life-threatening injuries, seven with life-threatening injuries, and six with minor injuries. The wounded included 12 children between the ages of 6 and 15, with nine of them having gunshot wounds. However, none were in critical condition, and all were expected to recover, as per officials at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
The shooting, which took place west of Union Station, resulted in the immediate arrest of three suspects, one of whom was apprehended by police shortly after the gunfire. At least one firearm was recovered in connection with the incident. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed that police were actively investigating the motive behind the shooting. Although nothing was definitively ruled out, law enforcement sources indicated that the incident appeared to stem from an argument or dispute and did not initially indicate terrorism or extremism.
During a news conference, Graves expressed anger over the senseless violence, emphasizing that people attending the celebration should have been able to expect a safe environment. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas also spoke out, expressing heartbreak over the incident and the need to address the ongoing threat of mass shootings. Both officials praised the swift response of law enforcement officers in the aftermath of the shooting.
Moving forward, Kansas City police established a special phone line for individuals to provide information related to the incident affecting those at the parade. This includes seeking details from the public that may assist with the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Additionally, Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife, as well as Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, confirmed their safety and expressed condolences for the victims and gratitude for the first responders who swiftly responded to the scene.
The NFL, in a statement, expressed deep sadness over the tragic events, extending thoughts to the victims and everyone affected by the shooting. Furthermore, players and staff associated with the Kansas City Chiefs, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, expressed their condolences and prayers for the community.
