During a crucial possession in overtime, head coach Kyle Shanahan called a timeout with the Chiefs facing second-and-6 from the San Francisco 37-yard line. Shanahan later commented that he didn’t like the defensive look the Chiefs were in, and one of the players looked gassed, so he thought it would be a good time to use a timeout.
Steve Wilks, who joined the 49ers as a coach prior to the last season, was responsible for the team’s defensive effort. However, despite the team’s rise to become the NFL’s best defensive unit, Wilks is no longer in his role with the team. This decision came after the disappointment expressed by Shanahan, Wilks, and general manager John Lynch regarding the defensive effort in the two playoff games leading to the Super Bowl. However, Lynch mentioned that he was proud of the defense’s performance in the last game and felt that they were competitive and had improved.
Ultimately, it seems that the improvement wasn’t enough for Wilks to remain in his role with the 49ers. The team will now be looking for a new defensive coach to continue building on their defensive efforts.
