Nebraska baseball clinches inaugural Big Ten Tournament crown

The Nebraska Cornhuskers emerged victorious in the Big Ten conference tournament, securing a 2-1 win over Penn State in a thrilling finale. Gabe Swanson played the hero with a clutch two-out double in the ninth inning, driving in the winning run. Pitcher Brett Sears, the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, closed out the game to seal the victory and send Nebraska to the super regionals.

Nebraska, a relatively new addition to the Big Ten since 2011, has now won the conference tournament three times, with previous victories in 2017 and 2021. Despite their success in the conference tournament, the Cornhuskers have yet to capture a College World Series title, having reached the event three times in the past.

The game was a tight affair, with both teams locked in a pitching duel until the late innings. Penn State’s Travis Luensmann stymied Nebraska’s offense for much of the game before Josh Caron’s crucial home run tied the score in the seventh inning. However, it was Nebraska’s resilience and timely hitting from Swanson that ultimately secured the victory.

The crowd of 13,300 witnessed a memorable moment in Nebraska baseball history as Swanson delivered in the clutch to give his team the lead. The atmosphere was electric as Sears, the standout pitcher of the tournament, closed out the game with poise and precision.

The win was a redemption story for Nebraska, who had suffered a lopsided loss in the tournament opener but bounced back to win every game thereafter. With momentum on their side, the Cornhuskers now set their sights on the super regionals with confidence and determination.
