NCBCP Black Women’s Roundtable Hosts 10th Annual “Women of Power” Jazz Brunch at Essence Fest 2024

The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) recently held their 10th Annual Women of Power Jazz Brunch as part of Essence Festival 2024. The event, which took place at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, featured two Power Tables focusing on Achieving Racial, Economic, and Social Justice and Unleashing the Power of the Black Youth Vote.

During the event, leaders discussed the pivotal role of Black women in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, as well as findings from recent polling conducted by BWR in collaboration with Essence and HIT Strategies. The discussions also addressed pressing issues affecting Black youth and adults, such as economic equality, healthcare access, and reproductive rights.

Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of NCBCP and National Convener of BWR, emphasized the importance of leveraging the power of the Black women’s vote and the Black youth vote in the upcoming election. She highlighted that voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, workers’ rights, affirmative action, access to economic opportunity, education, and the freedom to learn black history are all on the ballot in 2024.

The NCBCP is dedicated to increasing civic engagement and voter participation in Black and underserved communities, while the BWR focuses on promoting health and wellness, economic security, education, and global empowerment for women and girls. The organizations have state affiliates and networks in 12 states and the District of Columbia.

The Mississippi Black Women’s Roundtable (MS BWR) and Louisiana Black Women’s Roundtable (LA BWR) are intergenerational civic engagement networks focused on increasing the civic, economic, and political power of Black women and girls in their respective states. They are committed to addressing issues such as wage gaps, access to healthcare, quality childcare, and empowering Black women and girls to take leadership roles in their communities.

Overall, the Women of Power Jazz Brunch at Essence Festival 2024 provided a platform for Black women leaders to strategize on voter engagement initiatives and shape policies that will impact the future of their communities. The event showcased the importance of unity, empowerment, and advocacy within the Black community and emphasized the need for collective action to secure rights, freedom, and opportunities for future generations.
