NASA Awards Contract for Telescope Launch Mission

NASA recently announced that Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) has been selected to provide launch services for the COSI mission, valued at $69 million. Scheduled to launch in August 2027 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the COSI mission aims to study energetic phenomena in the Milky Way and beyond, including matter and antimatter creation, star life cycles, galactic positrons, nucleosynthesis, and gamma-ray polarization.
Led by the University of California, Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory, the mission also involves the University of California, San Diego, the Naval Research Laboratory, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and Northrop Grumman. The collaboration aims to achieve groundbreaking science through improved sensitivity, spectral resolution, angular resolution, and sky coverage.
The principal investigator-led project management team is located at the University of California, Berkeley, with support from NASA’s Astrophysics Explorers Program at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida is responsible for managing the launch services.
