NAIC names Gary Anderson as CEO

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has appointed Gary D. Anderson as its new Chief Executive Officer. Anderson brings a wealth of experience in insurance regulation, having served as the Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner under three different governors. His dedication to the state-based system of insurance regulation and his expertise in the insurance sector make him the perfect fit for this role.

Anderson’s career in insurance began in 1999, and he has since held various positions in both the public and private sector, including serving as a policy adviser and senior counsel in the Massachusetts State Senate President’s office. In 2017, he was appointed Commissioner of Insurance by Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker. Anderson’s responsibilities have included strategic planning and policy development for all aspects of the agency, making him well-equipped to lead the NAIC.

As the organization’s new CEO, Anderson will be responsible for guiding the NAIC in its mission to protect consumers and regulate the insurance sector effectively. His appointment has been praised by NAIC President Andrew More, who recognizes Anderson’s valuable experiences and contributions to the greater good throughout his career in public service.

The NAIC is a 153-year-old insurance standard-setting organization governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer reviews, and coordinate regulatory oversight to ensure the industry is well-regulated and consumers are protected.

In his new role as CEO, Anderson will bring his experience and expertise to the organization, supporting the state-based system of insurance regulation and navigating the complexities of regulating the insurance sector. His appointment comes after the retirement of Andy Beal, who served as the organization’s Acting Chief Executive Officer since March 2023.

Anderson’s appointment as the new CEO of the NAIC marks an exciting new chapter for the organization. With his leadership and dedication to protecting consumers and regulating the insurance sector effectively, Anderson is poised to lead the NAIC into the future.
