Mexico cuts diplomatic ties with Ecuador after embassy raid

Mexico and Ecuador are embroiled in a diplomatic crisis following the arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas in Mexico’s embassy in Quito. The rift between the two countries reached a boiling point when Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who had been convicted twice on corruption charges in Ecuador. The subsequent raid on the embassy by Ecuadorian police led to Mexico breaking diplomatic ties with Ecuador immediately.

The arrest of Glas has sparked outrage and condemnation from international bodies and Latin American leaders. The United Nations Secretary-General expressed alarm over the violation of the inviolability of diplomatic premises and called for the pursuit of normal international relations. Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the breach of the Vienna Convention and called for an urgent examination by international bodies.

In response to the diplomatic crisis, Nicaragua also announced it would break all diplomatic relations with Ecuador. The move has been criticized as impulsive and unnecessary by former US State Department official Eric Farnsworth. Ecuador, once considered an island of peace in the region, has been grappling with a rise in violence due to the presence of powerful drug trafficking organizations.

The arrest of Glas and the subsequent events have highlighted the challenges faced by Latin American leaders in dealing with organized crime and the erosion of constitutional norms. The dramatic rupture in relations between Mexico and Ecuador has raised concerns about the stability of the region and the adherence to diplomatic conventions.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the diplomatic fallout between Mexico and Ecuador has far-reaching implications for the region. The violation of diplomatic norms and the arrest of Glas have underscored the complex dynamics at play in Latin America and the challenges faced by governments in combating corruption and organized crime. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments in this crisis and its impact on regional stability and diplomatic relations.
