Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has announced that he will not appeal his two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. In a statement shared via his agent on X, Williams expressed his confusion over the ruling but emphasized his decision to accept the punishment.
“This week I was notified by the NFL that I have been suspended for a violation of the Performance Enhancing Substances Policy,” Williams stated. He described the news as a “complete surprise” and affirmed, “At no time have I ever taken something in an attempt to cheat or look for an unfair advantage.” Despite being cautious about any supplements or medications he ingests, he understands that the responsibility ultimately falls on him for what enters his body.
Williams expressed disappointment about the suspension and its impact on his ability to support his team during a crucial time in the season. “It will hurt me to be away from the team as they prepare this week,” he said, adding that out of respect for his teammates, he would refrain from discussing the matter further.
While Williams refrained from detailing the specifics surrounding the violation, he told ESPN earlier this week that he intends to accept the suspension, stating he has “no choice but to take it on the chin.” The NFL officially confirmed his suspension on Thursday afternoon. Williams will be eligible to return for the Lions’ game against the Houston Texans on November 10.
This season, Williams has achieved career highs in both receiving yards (361) and touchdowns (three), marking his growing importance in the Lions’ offensive scheme. With an impressive average of 21.2 yards per reception, he currently ranks second in the league, trailing only Indianapolis Colts receiver Alec Pierce. In the Lions’ recent 31-29 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, he contributed with one catch despite losing four yards.
The Lions drafted Williams as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after a standout career at Alabama. However, his time in the NFL has been marred by suspensions and injuries. Last season, he was suspended for four games due to gambling on non-NFL games, a punishment initially set at six games but reduced following changes in the league’s gambling policy. Additionally, he missed the first 11 games of his rookie season while recovering from an ACL injury sustained in college, leaving him yet to experience a full season of play.
Despite the setback with Williams, the Lions are performing exceptionally well, boasting a 5-1 record following their victory against the Vikings. This win marked the Lions’ fourth consecutive triumph and has placed them in a competitive position in the NFC North. With upcoming games scheduled against the Tennessee Titans and the Green Bay Packers, the team is focused on maintaining its momentum while Williams serves his suspension. His absence will be felt, but the Lions are determined to continue their strong form as they aim for a playoff push this season.
