West’s career in finance began in Sussex County, Delaware where she managed the books for her parents’ grocery store. Encouraged by her mother to pursue a career in accounting, West enrolled in the business program at Goldey-Beacom College. It was there that she discovered her passion for investment studies and focused her efforts on building a successful career in the field.
After gaining experience at Rollins Broadcasting Co. and Sears Roebuck, West joined Wellington Management Company before ultimately landing at Vanguard Group in 1974 as fund controller. Throughout her time at Vanguard, West received numerous awards and accolades, including the Vanguard Strategic Thinking Award and the Vanguard Award of Excellence. She retired in 1999 but continued to serve on the board of directors until 2014.
In addition to her accomplishments in finance, West is an active member of P.O.W.E.R. and has received multiple honors from the organization, including Woman of the Month and Lifetime Achievement Awards. She has also been recognized by Strathmore’s Who’s Who Worldwide for her contributions to the financial industry.
Since retiring, West has devoted her time to volunteer work, serving as chairwoman and chair of investments for Epworth United Methodist Church and becoming an ordained deacon in the United Church of Christ.
