Long Island artist Kaliopi Matheakis is set to launch the eighth journey of her signature piece “Saved” at an exhibition on October 27, 2024, at the Great Hall of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Hicksville, NY. Matheakis, known for her unique 3D art created from galvanized wire, was inspired by the turbulent journeys women face, particularly on the path to motherhood, when creating “Saved.”
The exhibition, sponsored by PR Hair Extension Salon, will showcase “Saved” alongside Matheakis’ other artwork from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Matheakis’ artistic process of weaving galvanized wire to create three-dimensional art pays homage to her ancestral Greek heritage, where women were expert knitters and men fashioned wire for practical purposes.
“Saved” has been exhibited seven times, each time in support of vital women’s issues such as pre and post-natal care and advocacy for women in abusive relationships. Now, at its eighth exhibition, Matheakis will focus on the economic struggles faced by working middle-class families, specifically in regards to access to affordable childcare for children under 3 years old.
At the exhibition, attendees will have the opportunity to sign a petition initiated by Matheakis, calling for access to low-cost or no-cost all-day childcare programs for middle-class families in NYC who do not qualify for existing services. The goal of the petition is to bring attention to the challenges faced by these families and advocate for much-needed change in childcare policies to support working parents.
