Justin Timberlake Drops New Single ‘Selfish’

After much anticipation, Justin Timberlake has released his new single and video, “Selfish,” in preparation for his first album in five years, “Everything I Thought It Was.”

Premiering at a special concert in Timberlake’s hometown of Memphis last week, “Selfish” was written by the singer along with Louis Bell, Cirkut, Theron Thomas, and Amy Allen. The song, which was produced by Timberlake, Louis Bell, and Cirkut, is a midtempo, pulsating ballad with love-themed lyrics reminiscent of earlier in Timberlake’s career. The video, directed by Bradley J. Calder, shows a self-deprecating Timberlake growing frustrated as he rehearses for a video shoot, climbing into a bizarre, miniature room with a red telephone, and smashing a miniature set with his foot. The video closes with Timberlake performing the song in a stylish suit with sleek dance moves.

Timberlake is keeping the campaign for his new album traditional with upcoming appearances on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” and “Saturday Night Live,” as well as a special free concert at New York’s Irving Plaza. Despite taking a low profile in recent years, Timberlake has made a few appearances, primarily releasing songs for the “Trolls” films. His upcoming album was announced by long-time musical collaborator Timbaland, who described it as a return to the “fun Justin” of “FutureSex/ LoveSounds” after the much more serious “Man of the Woods.”

Describing the album as “fun Justin,” Timbaland highlighted that they aimed to create music that is not overthought, with lyrics that are not too deep, bringing back the carefree and youthful nature of music. The album was curated with the intention of being reminiscent of “FutureSex/ LoveSounds” and bringing out the 13-year-old, 18-year-old in listeners.

Timberlake’s return to the music scene with “Selfish” and the upcoming album is generating excitement, especially after the lukewarm response to his previous album “Man of the Woods.” With this release, Timberlake and his team aim to bring a fresh and lively energy back to the music industry, offering fans a taste of what’s to come with his new album.
