Julie Nguyen from Thailand wins Flor de Caña World Sustainable Cocktail Challenge 2023

The world final of the Sustainable Cocktail Challenge of Flor de Caña — 3rd edition took place on February 3 in Granada, Nicaragua. A highly anticipated and prestigious event, it saw 32 of the world’s best mixologists competing to create the most amazing sustainable cocktails. Emerging as the world champion was Julie Nguyen of Thailand’s Opium Bar, who impressed the judges with her environmental consciousness and creativity in concocting sustainable cocktails.

Flor de Caña, the host of the event, presented a prestigious jury composed of renowned personalities such as Danil Nevsky, who is named the 3rd most influential person in the industry; Alex Francis, a distinguished bartender and bar consultant; and Mandy Naglich, a renowned food and drink journalist. The experts evaluated the participants based on the cocktail’s history and inspiration, use of sustainable ingredients and techniques, creativity, and flavor and appearance.

The winning cocktail, aptly named “From Sip to Seed,” was made using corn and local natural elements such as sugar Palmyra palm and coconut milk to highlight the main ingredient: Flor de Caña 12 year old rum. Nguyen’s achievement was acknowledged with a trophy made from sustainable materials, a personalized bottle of Flor de Caña 25-year-old rum, and a prize of US$10,000. She will also receive free sustainability training and assessment from Food Made Good, a partner of the competition.

The event saw thousands of participants from over 30 countries, reflecting Flor de Caña’s commitment to sustainability and its aim to promote these values within the global bartending community. The brand is known for its carbon neutrality and fair trade certification, as well as its use of 100% renewable energy in the distillation of its rum. Furthermore, Flor de Caña has a legacy of planting a million trees since 2005, which showcases its dedication to environmental responsibility.

Completing the event, Andrea Marseille from Teresa Cocktail Bar in New Zealand secured second place, while Lacey-Jane Roberts from Published on Main Bar in Canada claimed third place, with both receiving cash prizes and personalized Flor de Caña bottles.

This marks a monumental victory for Julie Nguyen and solidifies Flor de Caña’s position as a leader in sustainability and innovation within the bartending community. The event created incredible memories and experiences for all participants and helped elevate awareness and appreciation for sustainable practices in mixology.
