Award-winning literary icon Julia Alvarez is set to launch her latest novel, “The Cemetery of Untold Stories,” in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop at the United Palace in Washington Heights on April 3. The event will feature a conversation with fellow Dominican-American authors Angie Cruz and Elizabeth Acevedo, creating a night of literary star power in the heart of the largest Dominican diaspora.
The novel, published simultaneously in English and Spanish, follows the story of Alma, a celebrated author who chooses to bury the drafts of her unfinished manuscripts on a plot of land in the Dominican Republic. The characters of these stories come to life as ghosts, questioning whose stories are told and whose are buried.
Tickets for the event start at $10 for adults and $5 for children, with options that include a signed book or a livestream ticket. The venue, the United Palace, is fully wheelchair accessible and will have Spanish and ASL interpreters onsite.
This program is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts. Julia Alvarez, a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, has written six novels, three nonfiction books, and eleven books for children and young adults, with one of her novels, In the Time of the Butterflies, selected for the National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read program.
Angie Cruz, author of Dominicana, and Elizabeth Acevedo, author of The Poet X, will join Alvarez in discussing her work and its impact on generations of writers. Cruz, a Good Morning America Book Club pick, is the founder of Aster(ix), a literary and arts journal, while Acevedo, a National Poetry Slam Champion, is known for her powerful storytelling.
