Jay-Z criticizes Grammys for snubbing Beyoncé

Jay-Z made a statement on the Grammy Awards stage, where he received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. During his speech, he criticized the Recording Academy for its decision making over the years, particularly when it came to his wife, Beyoncé, and the album of the year category. He referenced the 1988 boycott of the award show by Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, as well as his own boycott in 1998 after not being nominated for best rap album.

The rapper also raised concerns about the lack of recognition for DMX, who had two number one albums that went unacknowledged by the Grammys. Jay-Z’s criticism extended to the recognition of his wife, Beyoncé, who has accumulated 32 Grammy Awards but has never won album of the year.

This year, Beyoncé lost out to Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House,” and in 2017, her album “Lemonade” was passed over in favor of Adele’s “25.” Adele, visibly emotional, expressed her disbelief at winning over Beyoncé, calling her album “Lemonade” monumental and soul-bearing.

In closing, Jay-Z encouraged viewers to continue showing up at award shows and in life, emphasizing the importance of persistence in pursuing recognition and success. His impactful speech aimed to prompt reflection on the shortcomings and biases within the music industry.
