Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons was arrested and cited after an altercation with Phoenix Suns player Drew Eubanks prior to a Wednesday NBA game between the two teams. The 22-year-old forward punched Eubanks, resulting in a minor injury before they were separated by police. Stewart was then arrested for assault and issued a citation before being released.
The incident took place at the Footprint Center in Phoenix where police officers were called to the fight between the two players in the tunnel of the arena’s parking lot. The Suns expressed their support for Eubanks and condemned the unprovoked attack, stating that such acts of violence are unacceptable. The Pistons confirmed their awareness of the incident and are in the process of gathering information to respond to the NBA and local authorities.
This is not the first time Stewart has been involved in an altercation; in 2021, he was involved in an on-court altercation with LeBron James, resulting in James being suspended for a game without pay for the first time in his career. Stewart, who was already ruled out of Wednesday’s game with a left ankle sprain, had given the Pistons his side of the story after the game.
Both Pistons head coach Monty Williams and Suns head coach Frank Vogel expressed their thoughts on the incident; Williams criticized the Suns for their statement and called for the gathering of information before making a statement, while Vogel emphasized that there is no place for such behavior in the game.
The investigation by the Phoenix Police Department remains active, and CNN has reached out to Stewart’s representation for comment on his arrest. The Suns and Pistons have expressed their commitment to supporting and cooperating with local law enforcement and the NBA in addressing the incident.
