The first record was for the longest journey in the UK on a single tank of hydrogen at 406 miles, while the second was the longest continuous journey covering 6,000 miles over 6 days around London. Compared to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the average stated range of a BEV sold in Europe in 2023 was 274 miles. While FCEVs undoubtedly have the potential for longer ranges, the key question remains whether such extensive range is necessary given the average trip length for car or van drivers in the UK being just 8 miles.
One major hurdle for FCEVs is the lack of hydrogen infrastructure, with less than 10 public stations in the UK. In contrast, the charging infrastructure for BEVs has significantly improved over the years, making them a more practical choice for most consumers.
