A senior Swiss delegation, led by Mr. Guy Parmelin, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, visited Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) on July 5th. The highlight of their visit was the premiere of the terapixel scale digital version of the Swiss national treasure painting, The Panorama of the Battle of Murten (1893), displayed on a 360-degree panoramic stereoscopic LED screen at HKBU’s Visualization Research Centre.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by HKBU representatives, including Dr. Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Chen highlighted the strong ties between Hong Kong and Switzerland, emphasizing their commitment to excellence and innovation. Mr. Parmelin recognized the similarities between the two regions and expressed interest in further collaboration in education, research, and innovation.
During the visit, discussions on recent developments in education and culture took place. Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer of HKBU, shared insights into the University’s advancements in teaching, research, and technology transfer. The delegation was also introduced to HKBU’s innovations in healthcare, AI, and culture.
At the Visualization Research Centre, the delegation witnessed several HKBU art tech projects, including the digital version of The Panorama of the Battle of Murten. This masterpiece depicts a significant Swiss victory and is the largest digital image ever created of an artwork. Other collaborative projects between HKBU and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) were showcased, offering a glimpse into the future of cinema systems.
Overall, the visit showcased the innovative spirit and cutting-edge research at HKBU, leaving a lasting impression on the Swiss delegation. The fruitful discussions and exchange of ideas between the two parties underscored the potential for future collaborations in various fields.
