F135 Engine Core Upgrade Fully Funded in FY 2024 Defense Bill

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, has secured full funding from the fiscal year 2024 Defense Appropriations bill for its F135 Engine Core Upgrade. This initiative aims to modernize the F-35’s propulsion system to enhance durability and enable Block 4 capabilities by 2029. The $497 million allocated to the F135 ECU will support detailed design work to ensure compatibility with all F-35 variants, retrofit capabilities, and availability to all F-35 operators.

The F135 ECU utilizes the existing F135 global sustainment network and domestic workforce, supporting over 57,000 jobs and 225 suppliers that contributed more than $2.2 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023. This funding underscores Congress’s commitment to the modernization of the F-35 through the Engine Core Upgrade, recognized as the lowest-risk and most cost-effective solution.

In addition to the F135 ECU, the defense bill also includes support for Pratt & Whitney’s Next-Generation Adaptive Propulsion program, specifically the XA103 adaptive engine. This funding will help advance the prototype engine towards detailed design review, further strengthening Pratt & Whitney’s capacity to support evolving propulsion needs for customers.
