Exploring Gollum’s Role in THE LORD OF THE RINGS franchise

The Lord of the Rings franchise is making a return to theaters with a focus on the intriguing character of Gollum. Director Peter Jackson revealed that Gollum’s complex nature, embodying both the worst of human nature and a sympathetic side, makes him a compelling character to explore further. The upcoming movie will delve into Gollum’s backstory and the dark period when he was alone with his precious ring.

Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in the live-action adaptations, will be directing the new movie and reprising his role. Jackson praised Serkis for his energy, imagination, and deep understanding of the Middle-earth world, making him the perfect choice to tackle Gollum’s story. The film is set to be produced by Jackson, along with other key collaborators, and the script will be penned by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

While the release date for the movie is yet to be confirmed, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslov hinted that it could be sometime in 2026. In the meantime, fans of the Lord of the Rings can look forward to an animated movie set to release in December this year. The upcoming film, tentatively titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will continue the legacy of Tolkien’s works with Jackson producing and Walsh and Boyens writing the screenplay.
