Leading Spanish mobile operators Orange, Telefonica, and Vodafone have come together to announce a major development in the field of digital security. As part of the GSMA Global Open Gateway Initiative, these operators are launching two network API services that will help developers combat online fraud and protect customers’ digital identities.

These APIs are designed to provide intelligent layers of customer authentication, verification, and security within mobile networks. By enabling developers to create new security features, these services will aid businesses in sectors such as finance and e-commerce in strengthening user authentication and improving security.

The importance of these new services is underscored by the significant increase in cybercrime cases reported in Spain. According to the Spanish Interior Minister, cases of cybercrime increased by 72% in 2022 compared to 2019, with almost 90% of them linked to online fraud. Cybercrime now accounts for around a fifth of all crimes recorded in the country.

Launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the GSMA Open Gateway initiative has already seen widespread participation from the global telecommunications industry. With 42 mobile operator groups worldwide already taking part, covering 237 mobile networks and 65% of global connections, the initiative represents a significant step forward in creating a common, open framework that makes it easier for developers and cloud providers to create more secure applications and services.

The latest addition to this initiative, the number verification and SIM swap services, will not only make online authentication easier and faster for customers but will also enable tighter security measures for businesses and developers. These services will also be showcased at the upcoming Mobile World Congress, further highlighting their significance within the mobile industry.
