LEGO® Education recently launched the LEGO Education Eclipse Collection, a set of engaging student activities centered around the total solar eclipse happening on April 8, 2024. This collaborative effort between educators and LEGO® Education aims to make learning more relevant, memorable, and exciting by tapping into real-world connections like the eclipse.
Dr. Jenny Nash, Head of Education Impact U.S. for LEGO Education, emphasized the importance of creating tangible connections to the real world to engage students and possibly even spark their interest in future careers. The LEGO Education Eclipse Collection, designed by teachers for teachers, includes various hands-on activities, classroom slides, and tips to help schools turn this rare astronomical event into a lasting learning experience.
Students will get the opportunity to explore scientific phenomena using LEGO Education solutions, LEGO® bricks, or other materials available in the classroom. Activities in the collection include designing and engineering a model of an eclipse, creating a mobile observatory for eclipse viewing, graphing darkness and light levels over a month, and observing the effects of light on objects in a darkened space.
Educators Jillian Johnson and Daniel Buhrow, who contributed to the collection, share a passion for using real-world moments to engage students in their classrooms. For Buhrow, a teacher at McKinney Independent School District in Texas, connecting with students through activities like these helps build relationships and transform classrooms into dynamic learning spaces. Johnson, a STEM educator at Orange County Public Schools in Florida, has witnessed firsthand how real-world applications of learning standards enhance student engagement and excitement for learning.
