Els for Autism Foundation® expands efforts to prevent drowning in autistic children.

In a recent study conducted by the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County, it was found that Palm Beach County leads the state in drownings involving children with autism. The Els for Autism team is working diligently to prevent these tragedies by expanding The Els Center of Excellence campus and offering life-saving programs. Executive Director Marlene Sotelo emphasizes the importance of coming together as a community to keep children safe.

Els for Autism launched a capital campaign in 2023 to build an autism-friendly recreation complex that includes a gymnasium, aquatic center, and splash pad. With support from Florida legislators and a generous donation from Stanley Black & Decker, they have received $2 million in state appropriations and $5 million in pledges. Halfway to their fundraising goal, Els for Autism continues to seek support from donors, sponsors, and grantors to reach their target.

While fundraising for the recreation complex, the program team is expanding the Ernie Els #GameON Autism Sports program to include aquatics. The aquatic program will provide specialized swim lessons and water safety training at the recreation complex’s pool. Once completed, the Ernie Els #GameON Autism Aquatics program will be available globally, allowing individuals and organizations to offer this life-saving program in their communities.
