‘Despicable Me 4’ a lackluster addition to a tired series

“Despicable Me 4” is the latest installment in the beloved franchise featuring the lovable supervillain turned family man, Gru, voiced by Steve Carell. Directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage, the film sees Gru facing off against a new foe, Maxime Le Mal, voiced by Will Ferrell, who is hellbent on seeking revenge. Gru, along with his family, must navigate undercover identities while trying to thwart Maxime’s evil plans.

Co-written by Mike White, “Despicable Me 4” offers a fresh take on the series with more wit, heart, and laughs compared to its predecessors. The film includes a clever nod to “Terminator 2” and features a star-studded voice cast, including Kristen Wiig, Stephen Colbert, and Joey King. Ferrell shines as the cockroach-loving villain, Maxime, although his comedic delivery falls slightly short due to the lack of funny lines.

The Minions, Gru’s loyal yellow sidekicks, are back in action with their signature mumbles voiced by Pierre Coffin. The addition of superpowers to the Minions, known as the Mega Minions, adds a fun twist to their storyline. However, this subplot feels somewhat disconnected from the main plot, serving more as filler content.

Overall, “Despicable Me 4” keeps the franchise alive with its entertaining storyline and lovable characters, catering to both children and adults alike. While the film may not offer groundbreaking innovation, it delivers on the comedic charm and heartwarming moments that fans have come to expect from the series. With Universal continuing to extend the franchise through merchandise and future sequels, it’s no surprise that “Despicable Me 4” will have audiences clamoring for more Minions antics in the years to come.
