Dearica Hamby, a star player for the Los Angeles Sparks, recently filed a lawsuit against the WNBA and her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, alleging discrimination and retaliation during her pregnancy. The lawsuit stems from Hamby’s trade to the Sparks in January 2023, following claims made against the Aces regarding her treatment while pregnant.
In response to the lawsuit, the WNBA is currently reviewing the complaint, while the Aces have not yet commented on the matter. Previously, the Aces and coach Becky Hammon denied the allegations, stating that Hamby was traded for strategic reasons to make room for signing Candace Parker.
Despite the WNBA investigating the situation and suspending Hammon for two games without pay, Hamby believes that more action should have been taken. She filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which ruled in May that she had the right to sue.
Hamby’s attorneys emphasize that federal laws protect pregnant women from discrimination in the workplace and criticize the Aces for punishing her for becoming pregnant. They argue that the light punishment from the WNBA sets a concerning precedent for all potential mothers in the league.
With an impressive career in the WNBA, including two Sixth Player of the Year awards and multiple All-Star appearances, Hamby continues to excel on the court. This season, she is averaging career highs in points and rebounds, showcasing her talent and dedication to the game.
The lawsuit against the Aces is just one of the off-court issues facing the team, as they are also under investigation for a sponsorship deal with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
