The NAIRR pilot presents a promising opportunity for U.S.-based researchers and educators to gain access to essential resources, including cutting-edge computing, datasets, models, software, training, and user support. This initiative is the result of collaboration between 11 federal agencies, private sector partners, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropic entities. As it expands, the NAIRR pilot will also contribute to shaping the comprehensive NAIRR ecosystem. This pilot serves as a proof of concept, catalyzing the investment required to bring the complete NAIRR vision to fruition.
Director Sethuraman Panchanathan of the National Science Foundation (NSF) highlighted the urgency of developing a National AI Research Resource for the future of AI in America, emphasizing that the United States must invest in AI research to unleash discovery and impact, bolster global competitiveness, advance AI innovation, and strengthen educational opportunities. NSF is collaborating with numerous partners to lead this effort. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is also playing a vital role in the NAIRR pilot, particularly in the NAIRR Secure focus area, which prioritizes safe, secure, and trustworthy AI with a specific focus on assembling and mining complete longitudinal health records.
Datavant, an organization dedicated to connecting the world’s health data to improve patient outcomes, has committed $2.6 million in support of the NAIRR secure component of the pilot, providing access to privacy-preserving record linkage technology, privacy-preserving data discovery tools, and staff expertise. Datavant is excited about the opportunity to contribute to the NAIRR pilot and to support the goals of the NAIRR Secure and NAIRR Software.
The National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) aims to serve as a national infrastructure that connects U.S. researchers to computational, data, software, model, and training resources needed to engage in AI research across various science and engineering fields and economic sectors.
