CZI’s AI Advisory Group & Residency Program: Accelerating Virtual Cell Model Development

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) has made significant strides in advancing its AI strategy for science by appointing key advisors, hiring experts, and launching an AI residency program. These initiatives will focus on building predictive models of healthy and diseased cells to accelerate scientific research.

The newly formed AI Advisory Group, composed of experts from academia and industry, will provide guidance to CZI and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network on leveraging AI and machine learning models for life science research. Some notable members include Sam Altman, Regina Barzilay, Reid Hoffman, Emma Lundberg, Joelle Pineau, and Mike Schroepfer. These advisors bring deep expertise in AI/ML methods to the table.

The appointment of Theofanis Karaletsos as CZI’s Head of Artificial Intelligence for Science will further strengthen the organization’s AI strategy. Karaletsos will lead the development of virtual cell models using one of the largest high-performance AI computing systems in the nonprofit life science research sector. In collaboration with scientific leaders like Emma Lundberg, Karaletsos will also launch an in-house AI Residency Program, bringing together academia’s best minds to develop AI models and applications for scientific breakthroughs.

By enabling AI at scale for life science research, CZI aims to pave the way for new biomedical discoveries and deepen the scientific community’s understanding of human biology at a cellular level. The organization’s work in science includes grantmaking programs, open-source software development, and collaboration with partner institutes at the CZ Biohub Network.

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, comprising nonprofit research institutes focused on understanding disease mechanisms and developing new technologies for diagnostics and therapies, plays a pivotal role in CZI’s scientific endeavors. Collaborations with institutional partners like the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University further strengthen CZI’s mission.
