The American College of Cardiology, along with other esteemed organizations, is spearheading an effort to create a new, independent Board of Cardiovascular Medicine under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). To gather feedback and support for this initiative, ABMS has announced a 90-day open comment period running through July 24, inviting input from a diverse range of stakeholders including healthcare professionals, patients, and the public. The first 10 directors of the proposed Board have been selected, with five more to be named soon. These directors, who are leaders in their respective fields, will play a crucial role in overseeing pre-launch projects and guiding the new Board through the application process.
According to the directors, a new model of certification tailored specifically to the needs of cardiology is essential to facilitate career-long learning and maintain clinical competency. The initial work of the directors will involve establishing the necessary framework for the successful launch of the Board, including creating bylaws, forming committees, developing a budget, and defining a continuous competency certification process. For over 80 years, cardiovascular medicine has been under the purview of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). However, with significant advancements in the field, there is a growing recognition of the need for a separate Board dedicated to cardiovascular medicine. This proposed independent Board, governed by cardiologists for cardiologists, aims to enhance competencies and support lifelong learning and skill development among clinicians.
