Popularium, a game development company co-founded by industry veteran Richard Garfield, is set to launch the world’s first autobattler-royale game, Chaos Agents, in summer 2024. The game combines the large-scale battle royale format with the popular auto-battler genre, offering players a unique gaming experience.
In Chaos Agents, players take on the role of coaching and guiding their own Chaos Agent, a globally unique superhero character, through strategic card play similar to Garfield’s previous games like Magic and Keyforge. The goal is to lead the Chaos Agent to victory in a battle royale against other Agents, with each Agent being globally unique, allowing only one player in the world to control an Agent at a time.
During the early development stages, Popularium released a prototype of Chaos Agents to a small community in October 2023, receiving positive feedback and high engagement from players. Over 70% of players returned to the game at least once a week, showcasing the appeal of the innovative autobattler-royale concept.
The strong community engagement and feedback have accelerated the development process of Chaos Agents, with over 20,000 applicants waiting to join the playtest. This overwhelming response has allowed Popularium to progress towards a public Alpha launch faster than anticipated, transitioning from an NDA-only playtest to a broader public alpha in Summer 2024.
